Task 5: Wood Transfers

  1. Find some examples of wood transfer photographs that you like and write a short analysis of each and why you think it is successful and you like it.
  2. Choose a few of your own images to print to transfer to wood
  3. Watch the video below different ways you can create wood transfers.
  4. Collect supplies from Tiffany at LTC (you can also work in the framing room if you would like a change of location. I will give you supplies for the mod podge method. You can also try the wax paper method if you like.
  5. Create some of your own wood transfers.

THE PROCESS

Materials:

  • Unfinished wood panel,
  • Photocopied Image on Regular Copy Paper (you must use a photocopy of your image or it will most likely not turn out correctly),
  • Mod Podge

Apply a generous amount of the transfer solution to the image.  You’ll need a thick layer.

Press the image, photo side down, onto the wood panel.  Rub firmly to smooth out the image and remove air bubbles.  Let it dry completely.

Use a damp cloth or sponge to wet one section of the paper at a time.  Begin rubbing gently to remove the paper and expose the transferred image below.  I like to remove the top layer first, let it dry slightly, and then repeat the process as needed to remove the “fuzzies” that were left behind.

Once you are satisfied with the image, sand the edges lightly.  Seal the photo to wood transfer with a finishing spray.

You can also paint the wood before you transfer your image.

BEHANCE VISUAL DIARY

What did you like about this task?
What was difficult?
How did you solve problems?
Is your image successful, if so, why?
What adjustments (edits) did you do to your image?
What else could you change if you had more time or resources?
