Photography techniques – shadows

Get creative and really play with the way light and shadow interact!

  • Choose a photo by one of the above photographers (I have linked their names to sites where you can find more of their work), add to your visual diary with the photographer’s name, date of photo and what drew you to that photo/why you chose it.
  • Create your own photos using these one of ideas:

OPTION ONE: Use a Gobo (something that “goes before/between” your light source and your subject) to create patterns of light on your subject. You can do this with direct lighting such as a lamp, but you can also do this outside on a sunny day or inside near a well-lit window. Objects to try: lace, window blinds, mesh, flowers.

OPTION TWO: Play with the way objects cast shadows and reflect or refract light. TIP: Keep your background simple (even EMPTY) to fully take advantage of contrast and emphasize patterns and positive/negative space.

Make sure you add this to your visual diary!
