How to build a photography business in easy steps!
- You will need a portfolio of your work , you can choose some of your best work from LTC and other photographs you may have. Create a website page – I recommend Pixieset (for website and delivering online galleries to clients) Squarespace and Wix are also straightforward in website building.
- Build your social presence through sharing your work on Instagram.
- Do free shoots with models/family to continue to build your portfolio and develop your skills further.
- You can also work as a photographer’s assistant/second shoot weddings. You can look at websites like Shootzu for opportunities.
- Participate in workshops to learn new skills Teds and Canberra Photography Group runs lots of great workshops, the Teds ones have the added benefit of being able to try different equipment out. Longer courses such as the Cert IV in photography at CIT has a great structure that will teach your more about different genres of photography and develop your skills in a supportive environment.
- Perfect your postprocessing/editing and narrow down your niche.
- Once you are comfortable with your processes and have a substantial porfolio this is when you can start charging for sessions.
- When you start charging for sessions, you need to ensure you have a contract in place, and are invoicing/tracking income expenses.
- Ensure you have a backup system in place (I always backup client photos in 3 places as soon as I get home from a shoot). Don’t purchase cheaper, knockoff memory cards – its not worth the risk!
